Sure, locksmiths can help you our when you’ve locked yourself out of your house, change your locks, install a deadbolt in your door residential safes in your home, make a copy of your key, etc. But there are other facts you may not know about locksmiths.

  • Locksmiths Undergo an Apprenticeship – There are various types of schooling and training an aspiring locksmith can undergo as well, but an apprenticeship is a great way for locksmiths to screen the person they are training.
  • Locksmithing Combines Many Skills – Locksmithing combines the skills of a carpenter, mechanic, machinist, and security expert. The work requires an understanding of the mechanics of various locks, assessing the security of a lock, removing or repairing locks, and copying keys.
  • Prices Can Change Depending on the Circumstances – Ideally, everyone would get locked out of their home only on weekdays from 9 to 5, in nice sunny warm weather, in a nice weather. Sadly, this is obviously not always the case. A locksmith may have to add a little extra to your total depending on your circumstances, but it will usually only be between 4% and 10% of the basic price.

Unfortunately even a professional contractor can screw up a deadbolt installation, which leaves you vulnerable to break-ins, unless you call your local locksmith.
  • Locksmiths Can Duplicate Nearly Any Key – A good locksmith can duplicate just about any key, including those that say “do not duplicate,” and automatic keys. This is a good tip to keep in mind the next time a car dealer claims only they can duplicate a key.
