When you’re moving into a new home, you’re probably not thinking about anything but unpacking and arranging your furniture. But sometimes, the most important parts of your home are things that will help you in the event of an emergency. Here are just a few of the different emergencies you could experience in your home, and how you can take precautionary steps to ensure the safety of your family and your home.

Fire – Fires can be started by any number of things inside your home. It could be a candle, a straightening iron, a wiring malfunction, anything. You want to make sure that in the event of a fire, you and your family won’t be stuck inside the house. Checking your windows and doors to make sure that they’re properly insulated, as well as easy to open and shut, will increase your safety prep in the event of a fire, and ensure you have a clear escape path from every room.

Invasion – In the event of a home invasion attempt, you want to be prepared for anything. Making sure that your home is secured with a reliable security system, as well as sturdy doors and windows that have firm locks, can be the difference between a close call and a crisis. Setting a designated room in the house as the “safe room” can also increase your safety in the event of an invasion emergency.

Flood – Whether it’s weather-related damage or a burst pipe, a basement flood can happen to anyone. To make sure you’re protected in the event of flooding in your home, look into basement sealing and waterproofing. Basement sealing adds a protective coat to your cement basement floors, and you can also have waterproof panels installed on the walls to prevent further water damage. Basement sealing could save you hundreds, even thousands of dollars on basement drying and repairs.
