Before chimney was developed, houses can only have one storey. This is because it was not possible to contain the smoke in the house. Since the development of chimney, homes were forever changed. At the same time, our culture and even our way of life were changed. For example, we have some wonderful stories about chimneys. There was the story of Santa Clause coming down the chimney to bring presents. This was from the 1823 poem by Clement Clarke Moore. Even laws were created for chimney cleaning. It is illegal for anyone to be chimney sweeper if they are under the age of 21. This is under the Chimney Sweepers and Chimney Regulation Act of 1840. Today, we even have the Anaconda Smelter Stack which is the tallest freestanding brick chimney. It is found in Montana and stands 585 feet tall. For our homes however, here are three important things that we should know about our chimney.

First, the resulting fire from a chimney that is not properly cleaned can be more than 2000 degrees. This means that chimney requires regular cleaning. One way to have easier cleaning and maintenance of your chimney is to have chimney flue liners. The chimney flue liners offer easier maintenance. Second chimney flue liners and chimney caps or chimney covers can even extend the life of your chimney. Chimney liners, including steel chimney liners, ultimately protect the structure. This is because the liners serve as reinforcement. This will allow your chimney to last for years without needing repair. Third, there are different chimney flue liners. The most common ones are stainless steel, cast in place and terra cotta.
